Searching for Sugar Man

TEA, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, hosted the premier of this rather touching documentary ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ last week. The film won this year’s Oscar for Best Documentary and the BAFTA British Film Award for Best Documentary.

It is about a musician, Sixo Rodriguez, who was discovered in a bar in Detroit by two major music producers. They recorded an album in 1970, Cold Fact, which they believed would make Rodriguez one of the greatest artists of his generation. But the album flopped, and the artist disappeared into obscurity with gruesome rumours of his suicide on stage.

A bootleg copy of the album reached apartheid South Africa and became a symbol of the struggle against apartheid, and Rodriquez became a phenomenon.

Two fans were determined to find out what really happened to their hero. The trail led to the most extraordinary story exceeding the one of the myth of Rodriguez. The film is about the power of music, hope and inspiration.

This clip is a taster for the 86 minute film must watch film.
