Adventures at the Grand Hotel Mencey

Adventures at the Grand Hotel Mencey

Pete told me Spanish Royalty have stayed at this Hotel, it is the best Hotel in the Capital Santa Cruz.

Our room is bright and airy overlooking the gardens. The bathroom has large walk in shower with plenty of “Gilchrist & Soames” toiletries. Our room is decorated contemporary style, with lots of long crisp white curtains. Each room has a candle in a holder left as a Xmas gift.

On arrival we decide to eat in the restaurant, buffet for starters with some unusual dishes. Santa Cruz is not considered a high tourist area so food is more Spanish style. There was unexpected cabaret included when a Russian guy slapped his girlfriend. The waiters and security were watching him after this incident. New Year’s Eve he appeared again banging his hand on the bar for service!

We decided to try the Spa; I don’t think we are really Spa people….. Jumping in freezing cold water, blasted by strong jets of water which Pete said helped his bad shoulder, I didn’t like them, and I preferred the bubbles.

There was a dark room with tiny lights in the ceiling we relaxed in there in a huge bath o df warm water; only to venture into the sauna to get our bottoms burnt Ouch! There were some shallow pools full of stones, Pete walked through them looking like he was walking on scorching stones! They were for decorative purpose only! Trying to look like we knew what we were doing, we threw some of the ice around then run in and out of a hot shower.

With dressing gown and slippers on we take a lie down on the white leather couches, only they are too low and we cannot get back up! So roll ourselves off to have a glass of what I thought was a nice juice. Pete thought it was Sangria, it was cold tea, definitely time to leave the Spa………..

On the last morning eating breakfast, a large piece Pete’s tooth fell out from a big tooth at the back. He said he did not fancy going to a Spanish dentist, who would probably just pull out the rest of the tooth. Ouch again! Decision made to speak with our dentist back home. The English speaking dentists are in the South, good job Pete has no pain. The [Hotel Gran Mencey](http://www.booking.com/hotel/es/mencey.en-gb.html?aid=337251) is one of the best I have stayed in, service is very good. We were able to see how the [Spanish celebrate New Year](http://etenerifeholidays.co.uk/blog/new-year-in-santa-cruz-de-tenerife) here by going out around 1.30 in the morning! The Spanish go out late, are up most of the night making lots of noise. Santa Cruz is a lively city at night; we had some really nice authentic meals here.
