A Weekend Break in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

A Weekend Break in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Auditorio De Tenerife

Tenerife can offer so much more if you step outside the usual beach resorts. How about trying something different for a change and spending a few days somewhere else in Tenerife, even if it is only for a few days?

We decided to spend the weekend in Tenerife's capital city of Santa Cruz to experience a more authentic side of Tenerife. Only a few people consider Santa Cruz for a holiday, but we had a great weekend break in Tenerife's capital.

Hotel Grand Mencey

Hotel Grand Mencey, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

We chose to stay at the Hotel Grand Mencey, Santa Cruz's iconic five-star hotel because we had often stayed here for holidays before we lived in Tenerife and liked to go out in the evenings to one of the restaurants in the Parque Garcia Sambria area.

Built in 1950, it has been visited by many famous people over the years. The hotel is an oasis in the city with its gardens and terraces. It is an excellent hotel for a holiday in Santa Cruz as it offers everything you could need.

The hotel has a relaxing terrace bar, great restaurants for lunch and dinner, and a pool and spa. We prefer a room-only booking without breakfast or dinner so we can go out and experience the city's gastronomy.

The hotel has an upmarket ambience and has many local outside visitors using the facilities, so it feels like something other than a tourist hotel. However, there are many tourists on holiday relaxing by the pool where there is a pool bar.

The hotel also has well-kept grounds, gardens, a tennis court, and a spa. As it is the summer holiday period, there were also some families. This hotel is different from your usual holiday hotel, so there are no evening shows, Karioki, etc., and it has a classy feel with the many Spanish clients.

The hotel has previously been home to many international stars, including Hollywood actress Liz Taylor and her actor husband Richard Burton, footballer Pele, James Brown, Julio Iglesias, the rock group U2, Matt Damon, and the King of Spain.

Parque García Sanabria

Outside the hotel is the Parque Garcia Sanabria. This urban park opened in 1926 and has shaded pathways, water fountains, restaurants, and cafes. The Strasse Park Restaurant is recommended for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The eggs benedict for breakfast was delicious.

Also, the Terraza Parque on the other side of the park is good for lunch, beer, or coffee. Another gem we found was the Panzaburro Gastrotasca cafe restaurant in Calle Méndez Núñez, which is great for tapas, lunch, or dinner.

Of course, there is plenty of sightseeing and boutique shopping if that's your thing. There are large shopping centres, boutique shops, museums, theatres, and many historic colonial buildings. You can also take a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tourist bus around the city. We should also remember the iconic Auditiorio de Tenerife, which resembles the Sidney Opera House on the seafront.

If you want to go to the beach, Playa Teresitas, Tenerife's largest beach, is a couple of miles away with its 1.5km of golden sand and family-friendly reef-protected beach.

If you have yet to consider a few days' break in Santa Cruz, give it a go. The Hotel Grand Mencey is the best choice for a place to stay for a relaxing holiday in Santa Cruz. We enjoyed our city break, and we'll be back soon for another weekend city break.
