Earthquake on Tenerife This Morning

Tenerife earthquake 18th August 2012

There has been a small earthquake of the north coast of Tenerife this morning measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN) . The quake, felt throughout the north of the island, happened at 2:50am off the coast of El Sauzal at a depth of 27km. Earth quakes on the Richter scale of between 3.0 and 3.9 are considered to be minor and rarely cause damage or injury.

The Emergency Coordination centre received 1250 calls related to the earthquake between 2:50 and 3:45 and came specifically from the towns of La Orotava, Santa Ursula, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto de La Cruz, La Laguna, La Victoria, Candelaria, El Sauzal, El Rosario, Tegueste, Guimaras, Tacoronte, La Matanza and Los Realejos.

No one seems to have been affected in the south of the island.

Tenerife has also been affected by devastating forest fires this year.
