I return to Golf del Sur, a resort I have stayed in many times. It is early February, and I have travelled from the North of the Island down to this sunny coastal area in the south of Tenerife, to stay at The Ritz- Resorts (Golf and Country Club) which has a superb Oceanside setting. The 18 hole championship golf course attracts a lot of keen golfers from all over Europe. On my other visits here I have used the facilities to learn the game. This time I am here to work. I prefer to stay at the club, which is just outside the main resort, and I can easily walk from here to the Gulf del Sur complex. This has shops, a good selection of restaurants, and entertainment. On arrival at the Club, reception makes me very welcome, and go through everything I need to know for my stay. There is a peaceful and friendly atmosphere here, making it the ideal place for me to get some work done.

I am staying in a smart studio which has everything I need. There is a well-equipped kitchenette, and some milk, tea, coffee and a bottle of water had been left for me, a nice touch. The club offer a wide range of self-catering accommodation. This ranges from hotel apartments which are at the Golf Club House to luxury villas with private swimming pools.

On my first morning I decide to get a bit of sun by the pool. This seems a fairly sheltered area, which is good, as it can be windy here along this stretch of coast. It is peaceful around the pool area, good as I want to read my book. As I relax on my sunbed the view is of the golf course, and the ocean in the distance. The bar is open, and breakfast can be ordered, this can be served in the restaurant or on the terrace overlooking the pool. I sit at one of the tables, and the girl from the bar comes over straight away. The staff here are friendly and polite, and very accommodating. I ask for green tea but I am told they don’t have any. So I order a coffee and an omelette. A few minutes later the girl comes back over and has gone to the trouble to find some green tea. The club offer a varied menu which is served through the day. This is reasonably priced, and as I am staying here they have given me a card which gives me a bit of discount off my food orders. The food and service here are good.

During my stay here I plan to visit some other resorts and the Amarilla Golf and Country Club is ideally situated for this. El Médano is about ten minutes drive from The Golf. It has the best natural sands on the Island and is great for windsurfing. For those in search of a lively night and bright lights, Playa de Las Américas and Los Cristianos the tourist capital, are only fifteen minutes away by car. I am not hiring a car while staying here, but there is a Taxi rank just outside the Club for guests, which is very convenient.

After a busy afternoon out doing my research, I can return to the club to perhaps sit on the terrace and enjoy a little treat (there is a special offer on for teacake and coffee for three Euros), or I may return to my studio to sit on the balcony, as from here I have views of the volcanic Mount Teide. Most of the accommodation at the Club has great views of the golf course and ocean, or the majestic Mount Teide. I notice my studio has been serviced, and clean towels have been left. The apartments are cleaned every other day here at the club.

I have enough to do, but for those who like to be active on their holiday there is plenty to do right here. There is the challenging Amarilla Golf course, the pitch and putt, or have a practice on the driving range. There are tennis courts on site, and a pool table on the terrace. A large adult swimming pool and children’s splash pool. (The club also offer a discounted childrens menu, and child friendly accommodation) At the end of the golf course there is a ranch with horses and stables. They organise rides or you can have lessons in the paddock. There is a marina within walking distance from the Club. At the end of the marina is a bar which has a rooftop terrace, here you can enjoy a drink and views of the ocean. On your stroll around the marina you will see a yellow submarine. You can book to go on the submarine, and be taken down into the depths of the ocean to see the sea life.

Amarilla Golf Piano Bar

The function room at the club brings back memories of a New Year party I came to a few years ago. I cannot remember how much the tickets were, but I can recommend. The evening had a great atmosphere and everyone was given a glass of champagne to see the New Year in. The function room is stylish and elegant. There is a grand piano and a lavish gold mirror which give a touch of glamour to the weddings, birthday parties, and anniversaries that are booked here, and of course my favourite the Christmas parties.

It is my last day today, and the weather is a bit overcast, so I decide to sit inside and have a coffee while I finish my work. There is a nice lounge area with comfortable chairs, and I sit by a large window. The window is so clear it gives the impression of a picture or should I say so clean. The view from the window is Mount Tiede. Today it is covered by a clock of white clouds, I can just see the peak which is covered in snow. I feel that Tiede almost casts a spell over me, and I cannot stop looking in awe at this magnificent giant lording it over the Island. It is time for me to leave, the lady on reception wishes me a safe journey home, and says it has been nice to meet me. The taxi ride to the Reina Sofia south airport of Tenerife is just fifteen minutes, another good reason to choose this resort. As the taxi pulls away I look back at the Club and think they really are putting on The Ritz here. It is a perfect venue for celebrations or a relaxing holiday.
